Drawstring backpacks causing nerve damage and poor circulation?

by Lauren
(Texas)

I heard that if you carry a drawstring pack, that since the straps are so thin, it can cause nerve damage. I also heard that it can cause poor circulation in the arms from the straps cutting off the blood supply. Is it true?

Would it be better to carry a backpack with a padded back and straps to help distribute weight equally?

Hi Lauren,

A good question that requires a common sense solution. Realize that drawstring backpacks are made from very light materials for very light loads.

If the straps press into your arms or cause any discomfort, then you need to change to a sling backpack or a sturdier two-strap pack made to support heavy books, computers or other everyday items.

Do not sacrifice your health for fashion. Choose function first and be sure your backpack can handle all your content.

Drawstring backpacks are better suited for light workout clothes, as a beach or recreational pack or to throw in your lunch for work.

Thanks for asking.
